The UN intends to abolish hunger and ensure food security by 2030, especially for the underprivileged and those who are vulnerable. While there are numerous ongoing initiatives to address these problems, the UAE Food Bank's recent establishment stands out as one.
The UAE Food Bank Bank was established on January 4th, 2017, in honour of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, VP and PM of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The UAE Food Bank is a non-profit charitable organisation whose mission is to provide food to those in need while eradicating food waste. The UAE Food Bank works with local government agencies, non-profit groups from throughout the globe, and local communities to establish a comprehensive ecosystem that will increase the effectiveness of food distribution, packaging, and storage.
It collaborates with food producers like restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, and farmers to efficiently store and package extra fresh food. After that, it distributes the expertly packaged food both inside and outside of the UAE with the help of volunteers and partners. The programme seeks to position Dubai as the inaugural municipality in the area to accomplish zero food scraps in addition to pursuing a humanitarian agenda.
The UAE faces challenges with agriculture due to a lack of water supplies and arable, and also high summertime heat and humidity. In order to improve productivity while maintaining sustainability, the Ministry of Climate Variability and change and Environment is collaborating with local government officials and farmers.
This includes protecting the limited groundwater resources that have been rapidly depleted primarily for agricultural purposes. In a changing environment that promotes agriculture, this includes using the climate-smart agriculture (CSA) approach to adjust agricultural systems, reduce emissions, and guarantee food security in both hydroponic and organic farming.
At the policy level, the Department of Climatic Changes and Environment began a year-long process in 2017 to develop a food portfolio policy and strategy, with technical assistance from the International Fund for Agricultural Development and key UAE stakeholders.
The process was designed to diversify and improve domestic food and food production imports in order to achieve the survival food security of the nation. To promote sustainability and the efficient operation of the markets for food commodities, five laws were also adopted in 2017: pesticides, seeds, listings of quarantine pests, fertilisers, and seeds.
The use of Mycorrhiza (a advantageous type of fungi that develops in most plant roots and is frequently used to augment horticultural and commercial crops), crop varieties adaptable to the local environment (such as saline and drought drought tolerant, such as quinoa), and effective protected agriculture technologies are all important aspects of the self sustaining evolution of the agricultural sector Food hygiene is a significant concern given the significant amounts of livestock and food that are brought into the UAE. Major advancements in biosecurity measures were made in 2017 by the Ministry of Food Security, which will lead in streamlining and privatising border inspections and quarantine processes with improved technical capabilities to ensure the safety of the people.
