The Plan's core goal is to reach the nation's clean energy targets of 27% by 20211 and 50% by 20502, which will be done so by implementing massive nuclear and renewable renewables. The implementation of tariff reform efforts, building codes, divisional cooling, appliance emissions regulations, demand side management programmes, and mass transit systems are just a few of the cross-sectoral initiatives being made to improve water and energy efficiencies in order to lower harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
A National Adaption Program was introduced in September 2017 during the UAE Government's Annual Meeting to promote awareness of the issue and implement adaptation strategies for vital sectors like health, infrastructure, energy, and water.
The Abu Dhabi Environment Protection Initiative, in conjunction with the Department of Climatic Factors and Environment, organised a regional summit on climate change that took place in March 2017. It was the culmination of numerous multi-year studies done to improve scientific knowledge of how climate change is affecting the UAE and the region in order to help with better policy-making. The studies examined how climate change is affecting coastal areas, food security, water resources, and terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems at the local, national, and regional levels.
Given the crucial role that the next generation will play in combating climate change, engaging and teaching youth on these issues remained a top priority in 2017.
The "Our Generation" initiative of the Ministries of Climate Change and the Environment, as well as the Ministries of Education, in partnership with the Environmental Protection agency of Abu Dhabi, has made progress in developing school curricula to promote natural and ecological conservation consciousness in schools and the adoption of actions to lessen environmental footprints. To increase environmental awareness, especially that of global warming, among all societal segments, the National Plan for Education and Awareness 2015–2021 is also being implemented.
In order to obtain first-hand knowledge of international climate change talks and to be introduced to a variety of environmental action performed globally, the UAE team to the COP 23 Bonn Conference on Climate Change in November 2017 comprised approximately 30 youth participants.
The Young Climate Mentorship Program, a new programme designed to boost youth participation in national climate change-related policy formulation processes, was unveiled at the Conference. Ministry of Seychelles, International Energy Agency, as well as Global Green Growth Institute are programme partners.
The UAE continues to support the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement and collaborates closely with regional and international partners. Food security & climate change were the main topics of the second yearly Global Action Day, which took place in January 2017 as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, and the first-ever Climate in Action event, which took place in February 2017 as part of the annual Global Conference.
